Are you successful in life or do you have significance? What is the difference between the two? We all know successful people, but what does a person with significance look like? We think of a successful person as having wealth, status, fame, power, and possessions. When I think of significance, I think of a person who has a positive impact on others’ lives. An example would be a doctor that serves on a mission trip, a professional athlete who sponsors a special cause, and a celebrity who organizes positive fund raisers. However, you don’t have to be rich or famous to have significance. Maybe you are a Sunday School teacher at church and provide a positive role-model for students or you volunteer your time to work with disadvantaged children. My wife and I volunteered to help with abused children and learned from them like hopefully they learned from us. We currently provide mentoring for couples about to be married and address issues that all couples experience, but sometimes never talk about. We share our personal and professional experiences to help them have a stronger and more secure marriage. Significance often comes from serving, sacrificing, and sharing, whether it is time, talents, or money. We can have significance with the ones we love or complete strangers. How can you have a life of greater significance? Decide today to stretch yourself, connect with others, and show by actions and words that leading a healthy and positive life can impact others. Do it now, time is running out!
