Have you ever noticed that some really smart people make some pretty stupid choices? How do you explain their lack of logical and rational reasoning? Daniel Goleman has written extensively on the essential elements of emotional intelligence. He has found that individuals lacking in EQ (emotional intelligence) have limited emotional maturity, self-awareness, empathy and self-control. We read about and watch on the news stories involving individuals who have created relational, legal, financial chaos based on poor decisions. My practice is filled with people who meet this profile and my job involves teaching them strategies to change their approach to life. Many are intellectually overdeveloped and emotionally underdeveloped, which often results in relational failure. The good news is that change is possible when the motivation, commitment, and openness exists within the person. Through communication skills training, conflict resolution strategies, and learning to validate others we can more effectively interact and connect with people. Human connection does require emotional awareness and expression. Experience life more fully through healthy connections to people. Start now!
